Doggy Day Out – Give a Shelter Dog a Day of Freedom

Share the joy of a field trip with a shelter dog! Whether it’s a walk in the park, a coffee shop patio, or simply a car ride with the windows down, a Doggy Day Out gives our dogs a chance to relax, recharge, and shine outside the shelter environment.

Step into a role that brings smiles to both people and pets. As a Doggy Day Out volunteer, you’ll provide our shelter dogs with valuable enrichment, new experiences, and much-needed breaks from the kennel. These outings reduce stress, help us learn more about each dog’s behavior in real-world settings, and boost their chances of adoption.

Why This Role Matters
Time outside the shelter can transform a dog’s mood and well-being. By exposing them to new environments, you not only enrich their lives but also help us gather insights to match them with the perfect family. A simple day out can be the highlight of their week—and the turning point in their journey to a forever home.

Responsibilities Include:

• Check in with the Volunteer Coordinator to review eligible Doggy Day Out candidates

• Safely transport the dog using an approved harness and leash provided by FWACC

• Take the dog on approved outings (parks, trails, pet-friendly stores, or your backyard)

• Provide opportunities for exercise, play, and positive social experiences

• Monitor the dog closely and avoid high-risk environments (dog parks, crowded events, off-leash areas)

• Capture fun photos and short notes about your adventure to share with staff and potential adopters

• Return the dog on time and communicate any health or behavior observations

• Follow all safety and handling protocols at all times

The Impact You Make
Every Doggy Day Out is a chance to show the community who our dogs really are beyond the kennel. Your adventure stories and photos help adopters picture the dog in their own lives, leading to faster adoptions and happier pets.
